On May 24, 2023, baby Chew Cheng Rui came into the world. Healthy with no disabilities until he was 5 months old. The doctor diagnosed him with a life-threatening heart condition called Tetralogy of Fallot, which consists of four heart defects:
Narrowing of the pulmonary artery (the artery that carries blood from the heart to the lungs)
A ventricular septal defect (a large hole in the wall between two sides of the heart)
An overriding (misplaced) aorta (the artery that carries blood to the body)
A thickened lower-right side of the heart
All of these defects add up to poor blood flow between the heart and lungs and less oxygen-rich blood going to the brain and body. This explains why Cheng Rui’s oxygen dropped to 85%.
Without surgery, baby Cheng Rui cannot survive
Babies with severe TOF often have cyanosis – a blue or purple tint to the baby’s skin, lips, and fingernails. Commonly, every time he is crying his face will appear pale and bluish.
A remarkable surgery gives a future to baby Cheng Rui and improves his heart and lung function.
However, the surgery would cost RM84,000! That does not include the cost of other necessities such as diapers and milk.
