Short Story: The Truth About Heart Defect

Heart defect MyFundAction

Many babies are born with congenital heart defects, and adults are at risk for coronary artery disease and other heart conditions.

Congenital heart defect is the most common birth defect worldwide, however it is rarely discussed in Malaysia.

According to the Ministry of Health, based on the 500,000 births per year, roughly 500 kids are born with this disease.

However, congenital heart also can occur to adults.

The most common types of congenital heart disease diagnosed in adults are:

  1. Holes in the walls dividing the right and left sides of the heart
  2. Defective and non-functioning heart valves
  3. Constriction of blood arteries that can obstruct normal blood flow

Congenital Heart Defects are the most common type of birth defect

The Ministry of Health has outlined these following signs to indicate heart defects in infants:

Blueness (cyanosis)

The infant may display blueness of the skin/ blue baby syndrome since birth due to the high presence of blood without oxygen in the bloodstream.

Heart failure

The infant may have rapid breathing or breathing difficulties during rest or feeding

Heart murmur

Has a heart murmur as a result of disturbed blood flow

Impacted growth

As a result of heart failure or lack of oxygen

According to the American-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the problem can range from moderate, such as a small hole in the heart, to severe, such as missing or poorly formed parts of the heart.

One out of every four newborns born with the disease is considered critical and requires surgery or other procedures during the first year of life.

Many congenital heart defects show no signs or symptoms. If multiple heart defects are detected in newborns, certain symptoms might appear:

  • Blue skin, lips, and fingernails
  • Chest pain
  • Fainting
  • Heart murmur
  • Palpitation
  • Poor blood circulation
  • Rapid breathing
  • Tiredness

The objective is to provide thousands of people a “second chance” to receive the care they require in order to live a better life.

Project name We Care For You (Heart Fund)
Objectives To help reduce the burden on patients by supporting their needs in operation costs, nursing care needs, and their daily needs.
Target recipients 70 patients annually
Target locations      Entire Malaysia
Contribution needed According to the patient’s needs

As for the parents, detecting it as early as possible we can change the life of that child, his family, the community and the country itself.

A lot of kids with congenital heart disease are still in the waiting list for heart surgery.

At least $25,000 is needed for every heart surgery to be done.
